Founded in May of 1995, Sonoma County Taiko is bringing the energy and excitement of Taiko to the wine country. Sonoma County Taiko began with a workshop in March of 1995, taught by Tiffany Tamaribuchi and the Sacramento Taiko Dan. Following that one day workshop several of the participants got together to continue what they had learned. Working from video tapes and from memory the group practiced. Their first public performance was that July at the Enmanji Buddhist Temple's annual Obon Odori (often called bon dance or bon festival). In February of 1996 several members went to train with the San Francisco Taiko Dojo under Grand Master Seiichi Tanaka. Sonoma County Taiko has been very fortunate to be able to learn from the best Taiko players in the world. Currently SCT has members learning from Taiko Dojo as well as with Tiffany Tamaribuchi. Sonoma County Taiko is now a 501(c)(3) not for profit organization providing cultural education and community to the public. The mission of Sonoma County Taiko is "to learn share and promote taiko as a cultural art-form". Along those lines Sonoma County Taiko performs at many local schools and community events as well as putting on its own programs intending to expand understanding and appreciation of Japanese culture through music, dance, language and art. |
